Charlene Ruby Barrow (Bonnette) was born March 13, 1932, to loving parents, father Jesse Courtney Barrow and mother Ruby Dee Barrow (Lucas). Charlene was the oldest of eight children. She grew up on Ruby Lane in Splendora, Texas. She graduated high school in 1950 from Splendora High School, where she enjoyed playing basketball on a clay court. Charlene married Bo Bonnette and together they has 2 children, Norman Bonnette and Deborah Luevano, and were married for 49 years.
Charlene was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Grapeland, Texas. She volunteered faithfully through the Love Circle, cooking for members and serving the church. Charlene, along with her husband, started a grocery store in New Caney, New Caney Super Market. They added the New Caney Locker plant a few years later. They sold the Super Market in the early 70s. Well known for their deer sausage, Charlene and her husband ran the Locker plant for over 30 years. They retired to Grapeland, where they ran a small hay and cattle farm for Bo’s remaining years. After her husband’s death in 1995, Charlene remained in Grapeland for a short time before moving back to Splendora to be with her children.
Charlene was a great cook and could always be found making cookies, pies or a hot meal for her family. Her peach butter will be greatly missed by her family as well as her hospitality. She enjoyed sewing and creating crafts to give to her grandchildren and sell at her church’s craft fair. But of all her talents, her storytelling will be missed most. Charlene was great at sharing her life with her family, and telling stories of her siblings, and children.
