Dean Voan

Dean Voan, a faithful servant who loved his family dearly, peacefully passed away on June 30, 2024. He was born on March 8, 1936 in Oakhurst, Texas. Dean was the beloved son of Mark Jake Voan and Mary Zelma Durdin Voan. He is preceded in death by his parents, as well as his sister, Ruth Adele Moore, brother, Morris Hulen (Buddy) Voan, his niece, Carolyn Moore Rushing, and half-brother, Charles Wilburn Voan. 

Dean leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to his surviving family and friends. He is survived by his cherished wife, Wanda Jean Voan; his children, Michael Dean Voan (Georgetta), Deborah Jean Voan Blanks (Michael), Michele Lené Voan Capps (late husband, Jimmy), and Paul Edward Voan. 

Also, grandchildren Matthew Blanks, William Voan, Brian Voan, Lené Whitfield, Kayla Willhoite, Austin Voan, Justin Voan, Ryleigh Lewis, Madison Cooper; his great-grandchildren Bethany, Alex, Ezra, Olivia, Ellery, Will Henry, Silas, Melanie, Morgan, Norah, Bentley, Logan, Rilyn, and Summer. He will be forever held in their hearts. 

Dean and Jean started their married life together on March 5, 1955. He was working at Modern Optics in Houston, and later worked for Brown and Root Oil Company on offshore drilling rigs and on ranches in Rocksprings and Anahuac, TX. 

Dean was well-known, much loved and respected in and around Cleveland, Tarkington, Shepherd, Liberty and Coldspring. He was a disc jockey on KVLB in Cleveland, where he was known as “Bashful Barefoot Brother Dean Voan”, he was an announcer at the Cleveland Racetrack, dispatcher at the Cleveland Police Department, Letter Carrier at the Cleveland Post Office, and opened an Auto sales and repair shop in Cleveland, “Voan Motor Company”. He became a full-time Letter Carrier and transferred to the Post Office in Liberty where he walked about 10 miles a day delivering mail. He later transferred to Coldspring Post office where he worked as a clerk. He loved his customers and they loved him! 

He and his wife Jean had a Country Music show at the “Tarkington Prairie Jamboree”, later just known as the “Blue Barn”. Before that, they had a Country Music show together with Joe and Alma Faye Guynes in Cleveland, and also at the Tarkington School, called the “Tarkington Prairie Jubilee”. Music is what drew them together and was a big part of their lives. 

Dean Voan’s presence in the lives of those who knew him will be greatly missed. He was loved by everyone who met him. May he rest in peace, knowing he touched the hearts of many with kindness, love and LOTS of humor! 

Dean’s life will be celebrated and remembered where he faithfully attended and worshipped his Lord at Shepherd United Pentecostal Church in Shepherd, TX during a visitation service to be on Friday, July 5, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A service of remembrance will be held there on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Gregary C. Gerald officiating. Interment to follow at Farley Chapel Cemetery in Shepherd. Honoring Dean as Pallbearers will be William Voan, Brian Voan, Matthew Blanks, Justin Voan, Austin Voan, and Wayne Adcock. Honorary pallbearer is Michael Blanks.
