John Elbert Matthews, 81, of Cleveland, Texas passed away on Monday, September 28, 2015 in Kingwood, Texas. He was born on Friday, January 12, 1934 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to James Hopson Matthews and Stella Lula Jane-Matthews, both of whom have preceded him in death. John was also preceded in death by his brothers, Woodrow Matthews, Herbert Matthews, Lloyd Matthews, Bill Matthews and Floyd " Red" Matthews; sisters, Lorene McWaters, and Jacqueline Davis. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Matthews; Sister, Lois Stagall; Children, Elizabeth Anne Brown, James John Matthews, Holly Loraine Juneau & husband, Chris, Hazel Delaine Kersh & husband, Earl; Grandchildren, Falon and husband, Matt, Krystalyn, Blaize and husband, Chendo, John and wife, JoAnna, Austin and wife, Lexxi, Christa, and husband, Kyle, Emily, Alyssa, Christian, Kyla, Preston, Sarah, Kayley, Isaiah, Anna, Micah, and Evan; Great Grandchildren, Kelton, Anthony, Hayden, Alexis, Bryson, Kambryn, Jallie, Daniel, Jayne and Greyson. Along with, numerous other loving family members and treasured friends.
John Matthews loved the Lord and his family with all of his heart. He lived and loved life, enjoying, his yard work and talking to any passerby's that wanted to visit. He enjoyed all genre of music from gospel to jazz and his forever favorite, Stevie Ray Vaughan. A quiet man with a wonderful sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye that always made you wonder what he was up to... most of his church family and grandchildren simply knew him as "grandfather". John Elbert Matthews will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on in his family forever.
