Joseph Allen Smith, a dedicated servant of The Lord, was born on November 13, 1944, in Bessmay, Texas, and entered into eternal rest on January 23, 2025. His life was one of unwavering faith, service, and love for his family and friends.
In his earlier years, Joseph distinguished himself as a Pastor at Josserand Baptist Church, where he passionately imparted wisdom and guidance to his congregation. His commitment to helping others extended beyond the pulpit; he volunteered his time as a PTSD Counselor for United States Veterans , offering support and understanding to those in need. Joseph was also a proud United States Army Veteran, having served valiantly in Vietnam, exemplifying a spirit of sacrifice and dedication to his country.
An avid lover of classic westerns, Joseph found joy in watching John Wayne movies and Gun Smoke. He cherished the simple pleasures in life, often engaging in card games such as "Trash" and "Wahoo," as well as enjoying the calming activity of word find books. Fishing, traveling, and visiting casinos were among his favorite pastimes, reflecting his vivacious spirit and zest for life. Joseph was an affable person, known for being a jovial jokester. He loved his family deeply and had a heart that welcomed everyone, never meeting a stranger.
Joseph will be lovingly remembered by his surviving family, including his sons Richard Smith and wife Patricia, Timothy Smith and wife Rodna, and his daughter Jolynn Davis and husband Craig. He is also survived by sisters Cleora Reeves and Betty Jane Burch, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, family members, and a host of friends whose lives he touched profoundly.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Virginia Smith, son Dwayne Smith, parents Barney Franklin Smith Sr. and Mary Lou Ray, brothers Henry Smith, Basil Smith, Eugene Smith, and Barney Smith Jr., as well as sisters Hallie Mae Smith, Mary Elizabeth Carlile, Willie Mae Atkinson, and Annie Laura Abel. Their memories will surely live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A visitation honoring Joseph’s life will take place on February 3, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Neal Funeral Home, 200 S Washington Ave, Cleveland, TX 77327. Following the visitation, a Funeral Service will be held at Neal Funeral Home on February 4, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Joseph will be laid to rest at the Houston National Cemetery on the same day, with burial starting at 1:45 PM.
Though Joseph has passed on, his spirit and the legacy of love he leaves behind will continue to inspire all who knew him.
